We Were Children

We Were Children

A story of the Canadian residential school system as told through the eyes of two survivors. This is a harrowing film, what happened to these children is wrong in so many ways I don’t even know where to begin- the physical, emotional and sexual abuse, the wrenching away of culture, family and love, and the fact that all of it was perpetrated in the name of God. It makes me sick to think that this happened here, in my country, to people of my country.

This film needs to be watched by anyone who considers themselves Canadian. It is a dark history that few of us Canadians know anything about. The only way for a reconciliation process to begin is for all Canadians to understand what happened to these children, to these cultures. Without this the ignorant everyday racism against First Nations peoples continues. We need to know our own history to understand the present.
